Before You start reading I must disappoint You – using Baseus 100W 20000mAh powerbank (described in this article below) would not work properly as UPS.
After some research I have described at least two working solutions in the follow up article – Tiny UPS for Tiny NAS Reloaded – available here.
It described the use of these EATON 3S Mini 36W 2200mAh UPS and ZMI QB826G 210W 25000mAh powerbank as working and reliable UPS solutions.

I am a big fan of building things by yourself. That also includes my NAS instead of using something prebuilt such as some Synology or QNAP NAS box. Although I must say that these small NAS devices with 2.5 disks slots like Synology DS416SLIM or QNAP TS-453S PRO look really interesting … if I could only put FreeBSD there. In the past these were my attempts at creating my low power NAS systems.

Currently I still use low power Dell Wyse 3030 LT fanless systems with 2.5 HDD attached to is via USB cable.
Its performance is more then enough for my needs and it really draws small amount of power – about 4.5W when idle and about 10W when fully loaded … of course when the power is available. Sometimes – not often but still – the electricity is gone for like seconds or minutes – which of course makes this NAS poweroff. Sometimes the electricity is back and gone several times in short period which is the most dangerous one for the longevity of these devices.
I was thinking about adding some small UPS just to shield it from these rapid on/off electricity events but I did not wanted anything big and bulky like a regular APC brick like that one below.
While doing its service that APC is like several times larger then the NAS itself. After doing some research and sticking all the LEGO bricks together I came with an idea to use a larger … powerbank.
After some search I have found a used Baseus 100W 20000mAh device in nice condition for about $25 that is even able to charge a laptop and a phone simultaneously.
The important specs for this Baseus 100W 20000mAh powerbank are below.
They may be useful when You will be looking for other model then that one for the same purpose.
When attached – the powerbank display showed 20V/0.4A so I assume this is the mode you will be looking for.

OK – we have the power source – but we still need to connect that power to our Dell Wyse 3030 LT system.
This is where AliExpress comes to the rescue – https://aliexpress.com/item/1005001433106467.html – where I got the USB-C to 5.5×2.5mm Adapter shown below.
This is how much space whole solution takes with powerbank as UPS added.
Fully charged Baseus 100W 20000mAh powerbank is able to keep alive the Dell Wyse 3030 LT system with 5 TB WD Elements 2.5 USB 3.0 drive attached for more then 8 hours and its displaying that on its display.
I also added additional small 90 Degree USB-C to USB-C Adapter to make the USB-C cable take less space – https://aliexpress.com/item/1005006223071504.html – from here.
As for the attachment to the wall for electricity – I used a standard small USB Charger – this one had 5V/2.4A output.
It is a lot smaller then the power supply that came with the Dell Wyse 3030 LT system (the lower one).
Lets check how adding that powerbank UPS look like when it comes to cost of the solution.

So the core NAS cost about $106 while adding the powerbank UPS to it added additional $34 with total $140 for the solution.

Thanks for this series of posts on your tiny (and capable) NAS! I think it’s good that more people are investigating the use of low power, low cost, and (in my opinion, most importantly) second-hand systems for production use cases. Using old batteries and battery backups like power banks to act as a UPS for a small scale system seems like a good idea to me for small businesses who don’t require the scale and SLA guarantees that large businesses do.

The author is mistaken.
Baseus power bricks do not act as UPS.
Their charge controllers reset them when a charging cable is connected to them.
I have looked far and wide and only found a handful of brands that actually do this.
On amazon search for keyword ups with powerbank and read through descriptions of search results and look for them specifically stating that they support it. All the others do not!

I just started to dig this topic more … and the first one (powerbank) that supports Always-On (or Passthrough) mode is ZMI QB826/QB826G 25000mAh one.
Ordered one on AliExpress – its at about $106+ price range.

I have found the following to be exceptional.
Both from the point of view of price, USB-C PD profiles supported as well as an unfreakingly cool Bluetooth HMI (shows realtime current draw etc. on phone).
AMAZING. (BTW I have no connection to these folks)

You are right in more ways then one, because there is a lot more to an ups than just powering something while the main power is out. True ups condition the power and stop spikes and drops in voltage, ie brown outs.a battery pack is not a real solution. As a matter of fact, I think itβs a horrible solution. Many batteries donβt have the βsmartβ stuff installed for lack of a better description. The circuitry that shuts off the actual flow of power when fully charged. Some of this circuitry is also in the charging device providing to the battery. This is scary if you get a random config. We just had a 40,000 mah battery catch fire on our bench because it was cheaply and the cheap charger didnβt βseeβ the short and kept applying charge. It just popped!! Now the config I would want for files id like available on a NAS.

I have a GMKTEC NUCBOX5 with a N5105 cpu I am thinking about doing something similar with using multiple external drives and a battery like that but one that can be charged and supply power at the same time working like a traditional UPS.

I would definitely not recommend using a regular power bank as a device permanently connected to power source and unattended. Moreover, LiIon and LiPol batteries do not like to be kept 100% charged for long periods of time. They degrade faster and are more at risk of damage. I understand that it is not for everyone, but in your case I would choose some DIY solution with recycling of used 18650 cells and charging up to 80% capacity, maybe even less.

Why are the ZMI powerbanks over 80 bucks from AliExpress and 160 on Amazon? Seems outrageous for only 25k mAh. I have a 20k mAh that I bought for 12 bucks from Walmart hit or miss ONN brand.

Great idea, love the concept of using a battery charging pack (basic yet proven reliable) as a UPS. I just stumbled upon this video last night, perhaps it is the solution you need to make it work:

Please consider using UGREEN power bank below. It’s the design as the ZMI. But much cheaper and can be found on Amazon. I was in similar situation and I bought it. It works the same way as ZMI. The difference between the two is the input charge of ZMI is 100 w to recharge instead of 60 Watts for UGREEN. For what I needed that did not bother me. UGREEN has an enen cheaper version but only 20000 mAh for about 69 after coupon discount. The USB-C labeled 100 W output has a separate circuit from the other two. But on rare occasions when the battery bank is very low … the UPS function does not work. This was designed by the same fox as the ZMI. German Company.

You should use a Raspberry Pi with battery backup and attach powerbank to it. So when powerbank cuts energy Pi run with battery for a while. Also a small laptop can be used for this purpose. Laptop with changeable battery is better for this project.
