Desktop Environments Resource Usage Comparison

Some of them use more RAM. Some less. Today in a rather simplified benchmark I will check some popular desktop environments for their RAM usage. I recently came to see some more or less old comparisons of various desktop environments RAM usage.

They were focused on difference between XFCE and KDE/Plasma environments. I am used to idea that XFCE is smaller and lighter of the two – so it should be also lighter on resources – but these two movies state that they RAM usage is similar and sometimes even KDE/Plasma is lighter. These results seemed strange to me so I wanted to test them under latest FreeBSD 13.1-RELEASE UNIX system.

Upon some popular demand I also added GNOME (the 42 version) to the comparison.

Today we will test these desktop environments:

  • XFCE (4.16)
  • MATE (1.26)
  • KDE/Plasma (5.24)
  • Openbox (3.6)
  • GNOME (42)

We all know that Openbox is just a window manager but I wanted to include it here just from comparison.

Test Environment and Process

To save time I used VirtualBox virtual machine for the purpose of these simplified benchmarks. For that purpose he created VM had:

  • 1 x CPU
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 128 MB GPU Memory
  • 30 GB Disk

After installing the vanilla FreeBSD 13.1-RELEASE I switched to the latest pkg(8) repository. Then I added needed packages:

All of the desktop environments and their dependencies were installed on that test machine. The main FreeBSD config at /etc/rc.conf file had following contents.

The only thing I added after installation was the dbus service startup. I did not changed any settings in these environments. The were compared at their default settings.

The test was rather simple and naive but these were the tasks that I done on each of them.

  • Run gstat(8) command in terminal application.
  • Display /etc/ in file manager with scroll to end of display of dir.
  • Open /etc/ssh/moduli file in text editor with scroll to end of file.

These were different for various environments:

XFCE

  • xfce4-terminal
  • thunar
  • mousepad

MATE

  • mate-terminal
  • caja
  • pluma

KDE/Plasma

  • konsole
  • dolphin
  • kate

Openbox

  • xterm
  • caja
  • geany

GNOME

  • gnome-terminal
  • nautilus
  • gedit

I powered off that FreeBSD machine before each test – so each test looked like:

  • boot cold FreeBSD system
  • login into system (in text console)
  • type xinit(1) command
  • do the 3 defined tasks

Each desktop environment had different ~/.xinitrc file. Below you will find their contents.

RAM Usage Results

To be honest I was surprised by the results.

Clean Text Console FreeBSD

The text console of FreeBSD 13.1-RELEASE system used about 97 MB of RAM. That result is the sum of the RES column from the top(1) command.

MATE

Next one is MATE and it used about 1361 MB of RAM.

This is first strange thing for me. Keep in mind that MATE is a fork of GNOME 2 which was expected to be heavy compared to light XFCE … at least more then a decade ago. Seems that now MATE developers are doing better job then XFCE devs πŸ™‚

KDE/Plasma

Next one is KDE/Plasma and without surprise (at least for me) it uses more RAM then other desktop environments – about 2843 MB of RAM – that is more then twice as much as MATE and almost twice as much as XFCE.

Seems that now MATE developers are doing better job then XFCE devs πŸ™‚

CPU Time Usage Results

As I already had the top(1) outputs I also compared the CPU time used for that limited test. I will not post the top(1) results again as they are posted above. The Seconds column below is the sum of the TIME field from the top(1) command output.
Here are the results of used CPU time.

Seems that MATE is twice as light on resources then XFCE. World has changed a lot since GNOME 2 was considered heavy fully fledged desktop environment while XFCE was light and fast … but even that ‘hungry’ XFCE takes only half of the time that KDE/Plasma uses for the same tasks.

Subjective Experience

The Openbox ‘environment’ started fastest and was most responsive to operate.

Both MATE and XFCE started little slower but after they loaded the desktop and taskbars they were snappy and fast to use.

On the other hand the KDE/Plasma took longest to load and each application I started – I needed to wait ‘a little’ with ‘bouncing mouse cursor’ for them to load. Also scrolling the /etc/ssh/moduli file to its end in Kate took REALLY long … even with Logitech M720 mouse which scroll wheel was spinning freely (without clicks). I want to mention that I am not disappointed by KDE/Plasma. Its just slower when used in a limiter 1 CPU and 8 GB RAM environment. Probably the load times and usability is a lot better on a 4 CORE system with 16 GB of RAM on fast NVMe SSD disk while we used rather slow virtual machine.

After adding GNOME to comparison it felt even slower then KDE/Plasma. Probably because GNOME requires hardware 3D acceleration for smooth operation. With its software rendering it felt really sluggish … while consuming less RAM and CPU time then KDE/Plasma.

Summary

Not sure how useful that is but I just was curious and wanted to check it out – and as I did I share what I found.

UPDATE 1 – Added freecolor(1) and htop(1) RAM Measurements

After suggestions from other places I added freecolor(1) and htop(1) measurements when it comes to RAM usage. Here are the results.

    Hey, could you add GNOME3 to this comparison? Also what are the exact versions of each desktop actually being tested here? I really love this work by the way!! I too am shocked that MATE uses less than XFCE… I have been using mate for 8 years now, and have tried switching to others but have always come back to MATE it always seemed to work well with less bugs. (although I use Linux and not BSD)

    Could you elaborate on your math a bit? XFCE surely doesn’t need KDE Gpg frontend kpg. And if 6800MB of 8G are free, how can XFCE use 1500MByte?

        Isn’t RES showing actual memory of the process + shared memory like in Linux ? In that case your results would be skewed. While it is clearly using much more RAM than my sway/i3 setups on Alpine Linux I don’t see numbers that high on my Fedora at boot time for KDE or Gnome3.

    Would be great if you redone the comparison by running these DEs without alien processes from other DEs. E.g. for XFCE you’ve got running: kgpg, kalendarac, baloo_file and other questionable background processes.

    I run XFCE under Fedora 36 which contains a more feature complete XFCE, along with NVIDIA drivers (which weigh in at hundreds of megabytes) and my RAM use is well below 1GB, vs almost 2GB for you.

    Probably I’ll do it myself but so far I’ve been lazy. I have a few ideas about doing it properly but it requires tinkering and I’m just lazy.

      That is interesting because I did not started these processes. They were also not started by any services at /etc/rc.conf as only dbus service was enabled. Its XFCE that started them for some reason … IMHO its more accurate the way it is now – as often people have for example XFCE installation and they also use Okular from KDE or Calibre for documents. Their dependencies are just installed and should not be run when not needed. Its very interesting WHY they were started. I always rebooted the FreeBSD before each test and XFCE was started with . /usr/local/etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc as it should.

    Nice comparison. I’m not surprised by MATE’s RAM usage. It’s really improved since its fork from GNOME 2 so long ago. Of course, I was quite impressed with the performance of KDE Plasma 5.25.3, though this was on Slackware. I haven’t tried Plasma since 5.22 on FreeBSD 13, so I’ll have to revisit this in the near future and see how it feels to me performance-wise.

    I do wonder about CPU time. Hypothetically any modern DE would assume multiple hardware threads, more than most apps would fully use, and might spin up more threads to decrease latency with that assumption, where limiting it to one thread then increases latency.

      When it some to responsiveness – then yes. But if you want to measure how much CPU time is needed – then it does not matter if a process (or thread) run on 1 or 16 cores – the total CPU time is the same.

      … and the lower and slower the CPU (and cores) the more small environments like MATE or plain Openbox show their speed and lightness.

    I made a KDE specific test based on Linux distributions default KDE configuration and found that memory and CPU usage varies a lot depending on how much of KDE is actually included in the meta package

    At that time my Htop results went from :
    OpenSUSE 478MB, upto PCLinuxOS with just over 1000MB.

    My guess is due to that high memory usage, FreeBSD KDE meta package include everything, even services for KOffice many users don’t use anyway.

      You are probably right – I am no KDE expert. Last time I really used KDE was KDE3 on Slackware almost two decades ago.

      I just used ‘default’ packages from FreeBSD repository. Not sure if people use KOffice or not – but IMHO files being installed on disk should not interfere with memory footprint. If KOffice makes KDE/Plasma use more RAM just because it sits on a disk … that is something not OK with this approach from my point of view.

      I do not have that VM anymore – but I have used Fluxbox extensively in the past before Openbox and it resource usage is very similar to Openbox.

      I would say that Openbox takes (very little) less then Fluxbox – but its mostly because of the fact that Fluxbox is written in C++ while Openbox is written in C … but in 2022 with 4-8 GB of RAM minimum in each system this difference is so small that it can be ignored altogether.

    The problem to test the RAM usage with all de installed its that aome services and modules frome one are always loaded as baloo (plasma) in the xfce bench for example, the BEST results is testing one at once

      FreeBSD is not Debian. If you install package – its just files on disk. Apps and libraries installed on the disk are not enabled for any autostart. Its also not unusual that you run XFCE as a desktop and prefer Okular from KDE for PDF files and Caja file manager from Mate as its just better then Thunar – while Thunar has great bulk renamer – that is why I use them both.

      That is the reason I first installed them all and made the tests. Its up to a DE to start what it wants. I did not enabled any apps autostart and FreeBSD itself – or pkg(8) on FreeBSD – did not enabled startup of any apps automatically.

      Also … when You install Openbox of Fluxbox the XFCE or KDE does not start them – so If other things are started just because they were installed – you should ask XFCE or KDE maintainers – why do they look for apps and start them automatically …

    If you mess different in a single machines the test always Will be wrong, because for example in xfce the baloo service IS from kde, you need make the test isolated the de in different machines.

      Thank You.

      I believe there are differences because each one of them take different things into account.

      Because on FreeBSD there is no free(1) command. The free(1) command is available on Linux – and freecolor(1) can be added on FreeBSD from the pkg(8) packages.
